Filmmaking Life Hacks for the Filmmaking Newb

It has been 34 freaking years, but I’m finally back with a brand new post!! I’m sorry it’s been so dang long but school and life got in the way!

However, I’m sure that’s not why you’re reading this post. You’re reading this because you want to learn some filmmaking life hacks! Well, good sir- or woman, I’m not sure who you actually are- here are some of my all time favorite hacks, and the best part is you can do them all with your phone!!!

1) Use your phone to record audio!

If you’re just starting out, or really just in a pinch, there’s no need to spend a lot on microphones. One thing I love to do when I’m filming and don’t have microphones is have everyone record what they’re saying on their phones! It sounds weird, I know, but hear me out. The voice memo app allows you to record and then you can email it to yourself to add in later while editing! It also does look really out of place when films are set on modern day because nowadays everyone is addicted to their phones.

2) Use the YouTube Audio Library for Free Music

When you’re doing low budget projects, the last thing you’ll want to do is spend a buttload of money on some song that’s only going to play for like 10 seconds. One amazing thing I’ve found is that if you have a YouTube account with a channel, there’s a such thing as the YouTube Audio Library available to you with hundreds of songs for free! It’s mostly copyright free, but there are some Creative Commons songs that there are instructions for you to follow in order to use it, but you don’t have to pay a cent for it!!

3) Use Google Docs for Scripts!

Google Docs isn’t just for school essays. You can use the free service to create thousands of documents from portfolios to newsletters to screenplays. Yes, you read that right. Before you used to have to use special software to create scripts, but alas! No more! Google Docs has an add-on called Screenplay Formatter that you can download and create your own in seconds!! It’s amazing! But that’s not the only reason I have that on this list! Not only is it Amazon for working on them, but you can also make it collaborative! All you have to do is share the document with whoever else you want to work with and whalla!  Now you can work on it with a friend or two or a thousand!  It’s truly amazing! And not only that, but you can use the Google Docs official app on set as a way to view your script without having to print off a copy! It’s eco friendly and super easy!

If you’d like to hear more or see these hacks in action, check the video on all of this on my channel!!
